Commonwealth Day 2016 (Multi Day Celebration)
On the 14th March 2016 more than 850 Commonwealth Flags were raised in locations throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK Overseas Territories, and Commonwealth countries for Commonwealth Day 2016
In villages, towns and cities of Commonwealth countries organisations raised the Flag at 10.00hrs on Commonwealth Day, including Checkley Parish who raised two flags. A flag was raised at Great Wood Village Hall by the Parish Councils 2015/16 chairman Cllr Keith Flunder and former long standing Councillor Mr Pat McGarry. The Royal British Legion Standard was also in attendance along with several pupils from Great Wood Primary School and St Thomas’ School, and other members of the community.
Hollington village also raised a flag at The Raddle Inn. Raised by local Councillors Peter Wilkinson, Alan Hulme and Abbie Wilkinson. Those participating provided stirring scenes of pan-Commonwealth solidarity within the rich diversity of Commonwealth identity.
Commonwealth Day also marked the start of Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations. Checkley Parish also took the opportunity to celebrate the purchase of Great Wood Village Hall for the community and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque in memory of Ted Lowell for services to the community. We also be picked a winner of the poster competition that was on display at Great Wood Hall.
