In 1859, a plot of land was purchased in a sale of freehold estate (including quarries) in Hollington that was sold by Edward Philips. G E Street (see below) was commissioned to design the building which was completed in Spring 1861. The intention was to build a Church as a Chapel-of-Ease in the Checkley Ecclesiastical Parish. The Philips family of Heath House Tean have long been associated with Churches in the area, both as clergy and patrons.

Gorsty Hill United Church was created 25 years ago when the congregations from the Methodist church and the URC church joined together. The Methodist church already had a Sunday school room on the present site and when The Gardeners Arms pub came up for sale, it was purchased and the church was built. The building which was originally the Gardeners Arms became meeting rooms which are now used regularly during the week.
Services
Services are at 11am every Sunday morning. There are a variety of styles of worship. The minister, Rev Andrew Farrington leads worship on the 1st Sunday each month and the URC ministers Rev David Miller or Rev Marcus Hargis on the 4th Sunday.
In the evening of the 3rd Sunday there is evening worship which is quiet and reflective.
Other Activities
On Monday from 1.30 – 4pm a Knit and natter group takes place for anyone from the church or community to come along. Also on Monday evenings a Bible study group meets at 7.30pm.

Our church dates from the 12th century, the early parts being of the late Norman period. The 14th century witnessed major building work with the replacement of the chancel end the extending of the tower, which is perpendicular.
There are many outstanding features; probably the main one is the very fine east window (dating from 1320), incorporating medieval painted glass, predating stained glass by some 20 years. Checkley church has a Danish / Saxon connection, and boasts a magnificent font, complete with a Lamb and Altar feature. Three Battle Stones, or Preaching Crosses, are situated in the south churchyard and date from the third quarter of the 9th century.
All in all, our building is a treasure, and incorporates every architectural style since the Norman invasion. The only way to appreciate is to visit!
